Navigate to ledger.com/start and select your model. Connect your Ledger via USB/Bluetooth. The website will automatically detect your device and begin the setup wizard.
Choose between "Set up as new device" or "Restore from recovery phrase". For new setups, your Ledger will generate a 24-word recovery phrase - this is your master backup.
The setup will verify and install the latest firmware. Critical security updates are included in these packages. Never interrupt this process.
Set a 4-8 digit PIN code using the device buttons. This prevents unauthorized access if your Ledger is physically stolen. After 3 incorrect attempts, the device wipes itself.
Write down the 24 words in exact order on the provided recovery sheet. Store this offline in multiple secure locations. Never digitize your recovery phrase.
Confirm your backup by entering random words from your recovery phrase when prompted by the device. This ensures you recorded it correctly.
Download the official Ledger Live application for your operating system (Windows/macOS/Linux). This serves as your cryptocurrency management dashboard.
In Ledger Live's Manager tab, install the apps for your preferred cryptocurrencies. Each app enables transactions for its respective blockchain.
Immediately stop if you encounter:
1. Install Ledger Live Mobile from official app stores
2. Enable Bluetooth permissions for the app
3. Follow the in-app pairing process
4. Physically confirm connection on your Ledger screen
